Program Description:
OASIS SKATEBOARD FACTORY
School / SK8 & Street Art Design Services
Just ask students at the
worldʼs first skateboard design school site where it starts
and theyʼll tell you it begins with the board. How do
skateboards and schools mix? At Oasis Skateboard Factory (OSF), a publicly
funded alternative school site in the TDSB, skateboards are a way to experience
success and earn high school credits. OSF teachers and community partners
reengage students who had not previously experienced school success. These
young boarders apply to enter the program so they can learn to design and build
decks, create a brand that reflects their personal vision and to spray graphics
with impact. They explore a range of curricular areas through high profile,
public arts and entrepreneurship projects run in collaboration with
professional mentors, earning a range of credits including English/Media,
Business/Marketing, Arts/Design and Leadership. With the focus and courage it
takes for individual skaters to master a trick, OSF students also become part
of a hard-working team, building a successful business while succeeding in
school and developing transferable creative and entrepreneurial skills. They
experience a feeling of success when they push their branded boards onto the
street!
An internationally
recognized model of student engagement that inspires other youth organizations
and a unique TDSB educational program that doesnʼt exist
anywhere else in the world, the OSF recently achieved a 100% course completion
rate for previously non-attending, non- achieving, hard to engage youth! OSF is
an award-winning innovative school / social enterprise whose mandate is to
reengage "at-risk" youth both in school and in the community.
